FAU's Director of Nursing Leadership Institute Selected as a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow

BOCA RATON, FL (July 6, 2006) –Dr. Rose Sherman, director of the Nursing Leadership Institute of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University, recently was awarded a national fellowship program focused on leading the country’s healthcare system into the 21st century. Sherman is one of 20 nurses in executive leadership roles nationwide selected as a 2006 Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow.  Now in its ninth year, the three-year fellowship program is designed to strategically position the voice of nursing across many sectors of the economy in a healthcare system undergoing unprecedented change and challenges.

“Nurses must play a pivotal role in leading the redesign and success of health care now and into the future,” said Sherman. “The Executive Nurse Fellowship is an intensive opportunity to develop critical leadership skills, work with a nationally recognized team of coaches and instructors from within the health care industry as well as from other sectors of the economy, and benefit from collaboration with nursing and healthcare leaders throughout the country. I am honored and excited to be selected as a participant.”

As part of the fellowship, Sherman will have an opportunity to undertake a leadership project to benefit FAU, with funding support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and matching funds from FAU.  She has selected the Clinical Nurse Leader Initiative as her project.  The Clinical Nurse Leader is the first new role to be introduced into nursing in more than 40 years.  As an RWJ fellow, Sherman will work with Clinical Nurse Leaders locally, regionally and nationally to assist with their transition into the profession and development of their new role in healthcare settings.  FAU is one of 90 universities nationwide who has introduced this new curriculum.  Boca Raton Community Hospital, Baptist Hospital in Miami, JFK Medical Center, the Palm Beach County Healthcare District’s School Nurse Program, Children’s Medical Services, Martin Memorial Health System and St. Lucie Medical Center are collaborating with FAU on this initiative.

Shermanjoined the FAU nursing faculty in 2002 after a 25-year leadership career with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Sherman has her B.S.N. in nursing and a B.A. in political science from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in nursing from the Catholic University of America and a Ed.D. in Nursing Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 2005, Sherman was named the Florida Nurse Leader of the Year by the Florida Organization of Nurse Executives for her work on nursing leadership development.
