Universityof Miami Miller School of Medicine at FAU Receives Grant to Enhance Patient Care with Chronic Diseases
BOCA RATON, FL (June 20, 2006) – The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University (UMMSM) is one of 10 U.S. medical schools, including Vanderbilt and UCLA, to receive an Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) grant, supported by Josiah Macy Foundation, to enhance medical students’ and medical residents’ ability to care for patients with chronic diseases.
Dr. Michael L. Friedland, FAU vice president for medical affairs, will serve as principal investigator. “Being selected for receipt of this highly competitive Macy Foundation Grant from the Association of American Medical Colleges is indicative of the growing national recognition of the University of Miami’s FAU regional medical campus as a place where exciting innovations in medical education and residency training are being designed,” said Friedland.
The initial $125,000 planning grant will be used to support the development of the new, innovative four-year medical education curriculum that will be offered on the FAU regional medical campus beginning in 2007. It will provide longitudinal integration of core competencies and best practices in the treatment and management of chronic diseases across all four years of the medical school curriculum. The AAMC Macy Foundation grant also will support the development of chronic disease management training in the internal medicine residency program at the University of Miami that reinforces and builds on the chronic disease core competencies incorporated into the medical school curriculum. Receipt of the initial planning grant qualifies the University of Miami FAU regional medical campus to apply for second year implementation grant funding.
