FAU Hosts Tinnitus Awareness Day

BOCA RATON, FL (June 7, 2006) – Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) is hosting its annual Tinnitus Awareness Day on Wednesday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will include free hearing screenings, educational resources, ear wax checkups, free earplugs and the ability to partake in ongoing tinnitus research.

The American Tinnitus Association estimates that 50 million people suffer from tinnitus, and two million people see their doctor every year for tinnitus, or continuous ringing or noise in the ears. Many people with tinnitus don’t understand that the condition is manageable, and very few are offered treatment options. Because of this fact, Dr. Ali Danesh is opening up his clinic to tinnitus sufferers as a way to offer treatment options.

Danesh, the director of audiology at the FAU Speech and Hearing Clinic, has not only been conducting tinnitus research, but he has been lending support to tinnitus sufferers for the past eight years.

To help solve some of the mystery of this annoying (and sometimes crippling) condition, the FAU CSD Department recently purchased equipment to analyze and measures brain activity in relation to sound. “We are studying the brain’s response to tinnitus,” said Danesh. “When we know more about this condition, we will be able to treat it more effectively.” 

The free screenings will take place on the fourth floor of the College of Education building at the Communication Disorders Clinic, Boca Raton campus. No appointments are necessary.
