FAU Nursing Students Host Luncheon for Countess de Hoernle
BOCA RATON, FL (April 24, 2006) - Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing hosted an honorary luncheon in appreciation of Countess Henrietta de Hoernle for her generosity in providing nursing students scholarships through the Countess de Hoernle Scholarship Fund. The fund, established by the Countess in honor of her daughter, Carolina Wagman, a nurse, provides financial assistance to deserving FAU students demonstrating financial need.
“We are so pleased that the Countess could learn firsthand how her generosity has helped these wonderful young people enter the field of nursing,” said Anne Boykin, dean of the College of Nursing. Hoping to see her scholarship fund grow, the Countess has requested that all future gifts in her honor go directly to this fund.
Meeting the students and hearing how each one has struggled to pursue his or her nursing education, the Countess offered praise and encouragement. Representing diverse backgrounds, the students shared a common commitment to the field of nursing. One student, a native of Russia, has been in the country for only seven years. With financial support from the Countess de Hoernle Scholarship Fund, she has been able to pursue her life-long dream of becoming a nurse. Many of the students, who are single mothers, expressed their gratitude to the Countess, and acknowledged that without support, they would have needed second jobs and would have had little time to spend with their children. Two of the male nursing students, originally from out-of-state, told the Countess how FAU’s internationally known caring-based nursing education program drew them to South Florida. One of the students, a survivor of the World Trade Center disaster, is at FAU in pursuit of a second bachelor’s degree after he turned his interest from finance to nursing and caring for others following his September 11th experience.
