South Florida Regional Resource Center Seeks Call for Nominations for South Florida’s Regional Excellence Awards
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL– (April 5, 2006) –The South Florida Regional Resource Center (SFRRC) is seeking nominations for its 3rd Annual Regional Excellence Awards Luncheon. Awardees will be honored at a luncheon to be held on Friday, June 23, 2006 from noon to 2 p.m. at The Westin Fort Lauderdale Hotel, 400 Corporate Blvd.
The Regional Excellence Awards promote regionalism amongst civic and business leaders in the seven-county region (Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River). The event recognizes and celebrates the commitment of leaders and organizations dedicated to improving Southeast Florida’s quality of life through innovative and cooperative regional efforts.
The awards categories include:
- Regional Leader Award - honoring an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to regionalism;
- Regional Partnership Award - recognizing a group or effort that has implemented a project that exemplified a commitment to regionalism through cooperation or collaboration;
- Regional Business Award – honoring a business or private sector enterprise with a verifiable record of accomplishment in the region;
- Regional Governance Award – recognizing one or more public sector entities that works across jurisdictional boundaries, collaborating for more effective and efficient use of regional resources;
- Regional Service Award - honoring a private/non-profit organization that provides a valuable service to the residents of the region; and
- Regional Advantage Award - recognizing an individual or organization that has produced the most results in its regional work.
Past recipients of the awards include Henry Dean of the South Florida Water Management District; Broward Commissioner Ilene Lieberman; the South Florida Regional Business Alliance; VisionBROWARD; the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority; the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)-District 4; the ICoast; the State Road 7/US-441Collaborative; and the South Florida Economic Summit 2004-2005. A special award presentation was also made to the former FDOT District 4 Secretary, Rick Chesser, for his professional commitment and personal leadership on behalf of the residents and visitors who use Florida’s roads.
“The Regional Excellence Awards provide us opportunities to learn about regional efforts and collaborations in South Florida. We also learn about other individuals in the private, public and non-profit sectors who understand the inter-connectedness and inter-dependence of the different municipalities, counties and businesses in the region who are taking steps to serve local and regional needs more efficiently and effectively,” said Michael Corbit, executive director of the ICoast, an organization that received the 2004 Regional Service Award.
Nominations for the awards must be submitted by Friday, May 12 at 4 p.m. and sent to: Florida Institute of Government at Florida Atlantic University, 1515 West Commercial Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 33309.
The South Florida Regional Resource Center is a partnership between the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions (CUES) at Florida Atlantic University, the Collins Center for Public Policy, Inc., and the South Florida and Treasure Coast Regional Planning Councils. CUES serves as the host organization for the SFRRC. The SFRRC works through its partners to ensure local groups, partner organizations, and other public and private regional entities work productively together to shape regional public policy in South Florida.

All proceeds from The Regional Excellence Awards will support scholarships for college participants of the regional programs and other work of the Regional Leadership Council, an organization that brings together leaders from Leadership Miami, Leadership Broward and Leadership Palm Beach and that educates South Florida leaders about the importance of working regionally to develop solutions for South Florida’s complex problems.
