Dr. Frederick Greenspahn, Gimelstob eminent scholar in Judaic studies at FAU, will present a lecture titled “Jewish Ambivalence Towards the Bible” as the final Kultur event for this season.
Greenspahn notes, “Although the Bible is usually considered integral, if not central, to Judaism, Jewish tradition has been ambivalent about it from antiquity to contemporary times. There are two reasons for this surprising phenomenon. The first is the extent to which its place was usurped by the Talmud, particularly (though not only) within the Ashkenazi community. The second is the important role it came to play within Christianity, which made Jews suspicious of those who were too deeply involved in its study.”
Greenspahn has lectured extensively on the Bible and Judaic Studies, and written numerous articles including “How Jews Translate the Bible” and the “Beginnings of Judaic Studies in American Universities.” He has written and edited ten books - most recently, “An Introduction to Aramaic” and “When Brothers Dwell Together, the Preeminence of Younger Siblings in the Hebrew Bible.”
Greenspahn has a Ph.D. in biblical studies from Brandeis University, located in Waltham, Massachusetts, and is an honorary member in Phi Beta Kappa. He is president of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew.
