FAU’s Wilkes Honors College Announces Summer Institute
Program to bring together high school students, Honors College faculty and Scripps researchers
JUPITER, FL (February 22, 2006) – Florida Atlantic University’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College will host its inaugural Honors Summer Institute at the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter from Sunday, July 9 to Saturday, July 29. The three-week program will bring together rising 11th and 12th grade students to study with the faculty of the Honors College and researchers from the Scripps Research Institute.
“A major mission of The Scripps Research Institute is to train the bioscientists of tomorrow. That begins with exposing young people to the excitement of world-class research in the lab and classroom,” said Dr. Harry Orf, vice president of scientific support for Scripps Florida. “Partnering with FAU’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College in its Honors Summer Institute is a unique opportunity for our scientists to interact with the next generation of researchers who will make significant contributions to human health.”
The theme of the institute is “Science, Technology and Society.” Students will take one of three honors courses and receive three college credits.
Courses to be offered are:
· The Biotechnology Boom, which will study new technologies, techniques and disciplines within the life sciences that affect our changing world;
· Bioethics, which will investigate philosophical perspectives on various issues in bioethics;
· Evolution, Psychology and Human Nature, which will consider the premise that human behavior is best seen as a product of the brain.
“The Wilkes Honors College at Florida Atlantic University is delighted to host the 2006 Honors Summer Institute,” said Dr. Keith Jakee, director of the Honors Summer Institute. “Our program will combine the resources of FAU’s Honors College, including several of its highly accomplished faculty, with researchers from the world-renowned Scripps Research Institute to deliver what we believe will be an unparalleled opportunity for high school students.”
Along with their coursework, students will participate in a number of other learning activities. Scripps scientists will present lectures and lead discussions three afternoons each week. In addition, students will tour Scripps Florida’s state-of-the-art temporary laboratories at FAU Jupiter and participate in a Saturday lab session with Scripps researchers. Supervised social and recreational events will also be included.
Cost of the program is $1,950, which includes a private bedroom in the Honors College residence halls, a full meal plan and all activities. Florida students who do not qualify for dual enrollment will also pay a tuition fee of $326; tuition for out-of-state students is an additional $1,639. Priority deadline for applications is March 15, 2006.
