FAU to Host the Florida Association of International Educators Conference 2006

BOCA RATON, FL (February 21, 2006) – Florida Atlantic University will host the Florida Association of International Educators Conference 2006 on Friday, February 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the University Center, 777 Glades Road.

The conference offers a multitude of speakers, two periods of breakout sessions with topics on the subject of immigration advising, studying abroad, admissions, community programming, English language programs, an all-conference session with government representatives and an opportunity to consult with experts at advice booths.  Participants at the conference represent more than 40 Florida colleges and universities and include advisers who work with foreign students and U.S. students who study abroad.

The media are invited to attend the following two events of the conference:

§         Keynote address: Dr. David B. Austell, executive director of the Office of International Programs at Wayne State University, “What It Means to be a ‘Light’ in International Education” – 9:15 to 10 a.m., Majestic Palm Room.

Austell will focus on the efficacy of servant leadership as it relates to International Education. He will take as his initial text a writing of Lao Tzu, which posits three key teachings: simplicity, patience and compassion.

§         Government panel – 10:15 to 11:15 a.m., Majestic Palm Room.

Representatives from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, and the federal Student Exchange Visitor Program office will provide information on policy, compliance, and procedural issues that affect international students and scholars.
