This educational exhibition focuses on the natural beauty of petrified wood. The brightly colored specimens are cross-section cuts of petrified wood, showing the result of living trees which have turned completely into stone - a process which historically takes from 65 to 250 million years. In prehistoric time, mahogany, teak, monkey pod, palm trees and many other unknown trees grew to their full majestic beauty – some 7 feet in diameter. With the violent changes of the earth and oceans, the trees fell into the seas and were covered with ash, soil and minerals such as manganese, lithium, copper and iron. The mineral deposits created patterns of bright colors. Petrified wood is so hard that only the hardest materials will scratch it (e.g. diamonds and rubies). With at least 50 hours of labor, the surface obtains a mirror finish, disclosing its stunning, natural beauty.
