FAU College of Business Opens Simulated “Wall Street” Trading Room
BOCA RATON, FL (February 8, 2006) - Florida Atlantic University recently marked the official opening of the FAU College of Business Trading Room with a reception in the Sean Stein Pavilion. A tour of the two-floor Trading Room followed the reception. Hosted by FAU President and Mrs. Frank T. Brogan and FAU College of Business Interim Dean Dennis Coates, the event brought together more than 75 guests from the academic and business communities. Mitchell Atkins, District 12 director of NASD in Boca Raton, was the guest speaker. NASD is the primary private- sector regulator of the securities industry in the United States.
Located in the heart of the College of Business, the Trading Room bridges the gap between classroom learning and business practice by bringing the reality of Wall Street trading to FAU’s Boca Raton campus. The hardware, software, data feeds and other advanced technology that is integral to the design of the Trading Room will provide students with high speed access to a variety of business information sources. Equipped with dual-monitor computers at 25 work stations, the first floor of the facility can accommodate as many as 50 people at a time. A connected lab with full audio-visual technology and an additional 25 work stations is located on the Trading Room’s second floor. With this cutting edge setting, students will be able to acquire valuable experience by using similar tools that professional investors use when trading and managing money. Outside businesses are invited to turn the Trading Room into a venue for staff training and development.
“As the FAU College of Business Trading Room opens its doors, students will gain entry into the past-paced world of finance,” said Coates. “This highly charged environment will simulate the Wall Street experience in real time for our students, many who are destined to be part of the next generation of business leaders. As a premier provider of financial education, the College of Business is the ideal home for the Trading Room. An invaluable resource to the community, the Trading Room will undoubtedly become a unique research and teaching facility in South Florida.”
Leading the charge that brought the Trading Room to FAU was Dr. Marilyn Wiley, associate dean, College of Business. “There was a time when the idea of the Trading Room was out of reach,” said Wiley. “Thanks to support from friends of the University, we are able to celebrate this very exciting opening and eagerly anticipate new and innovative paths in education. We have the tools to make this one of the finest programs of its kind in the country. With a variety of internship and talent identification opportunities, the possibilities are limitless.”
