FAU President Frank T. Brogan and First Lady
Join Slattery Families for Book Fundraiser
BOCA RATON, FL (February 7, 2006) - Florida Atlantic University President Frank T. Brogan and Mrs. Courtney Brogan will join families of the Karen Slattery Educational Research Center for Child Development for a fundraiser, specific to the Peter and Nona Gordon Library at the Slattery Center. This year, the president and first lady will celebrate Colby John Brogan’s first birthday by raising funds for the Slattery library and hosting a book drive.
“As a result of Hurricane Wilma, the library suffered an extensive amount of water damage, and in general, infant books tend to have a short life on the library’s shelves due to wear and tear,” said Mrs. Courtney Brogan. “It is important that we replenish these books, as literacy must be addressed early in an infant’s development. Reading empowers children to become independent thinkers and creative problem-solvers.”
The fundraising event will be hosted on Thursday, February 9 from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Eleanor R. Baldwin House. This event is open to invited guests only, though the media may attend. The community may donate books or funds to the Center by dropping off their donations directly to the Center or mailing donations to the Karen Slattery Educational Research Center for Child Development/ Florida Atlantic University, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton, FL 33431. Gifts are tax-deductible, and all proceeds will directly benefit the students of the Slattery Center.
