For Dr. Michele Hawkins, director of the School of Social Work in the College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs, the old adage “charity begins at home” rings true. In her eight years at FAU, Hawkins has designated that all her gifts to the University’s annual fund go directly to benefit the students and faculty of the School of Social Work. Hawkins has a clear vision of where her school, one of the fastest growing programs at FAU, is headed and what is needed to ensure continued advancement.
“The School of Social Work has really taken off,” says Hawkins. This year we graduated 105 BSW and 51 MSW social workers. If the school continues on this growth pattern, the number of graduates will significantly increase each year. Because of our success, we have more pressing needs than ever before.”
Hawkins, who earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees in social work at the University of Missouri and her Ph.D. at Southern Illinois University, keeps her eye on details that might be overlooked by a director less nurturing. She earmarks her payroll deductions to offset the additional costs of bringing special guest lecturers to the campuses. Hawkins knows that with these lectures FAU gains stature as a community resource.
Her generosity has also helped finance a variety of special events for students, faculty, new graduates and alumni. Although not itemized on the budget, these events bring people together, provide students with added networking opportunities and help build a sense of pride within the School of Social Work.
