Energy Saving Computer Tips
From IRM-Broward Computing Services
Published Fall 2008

Personal computers utilize a significant amount of energy. Many people mistakenly believe that computers and monitors purchased with the Energy Star logo are already energy efficient. However, that is not necessary the case, especially if the user does not take full advantage of the energy conservation features that are built on the equipment.

Configuring computer components to automatically save energy is the best thing that can be done to conserve energy. Users can effectively reduce the energy consumption by following a few simple tips: Woman using a computer

  • All operating systems allow users to manage the machine’s energy consumption through the “Control Panels.” In Windows-based machines, the Control Panel is accessible through the Start Menu. After you open the Control Panel window, you need to select the Power Options icon. The same feature is available in Mac-based machines. Click on the Apple Menu, then Control Panels, and select Energy Saver.

  • It is recommended that you configure your monitor to turn off after 20 minutes of inactivity, your hard drive to turn off after 30 minutes of inactivity, and your desktop computer or laptop to go into a standby or sleep mode after 90 minutes of inactivity.

  • If you are using an older computer, with an old operating system that does not have a standby or sleep mode option, just turn off your monitor when not in use.

  • Shut down your computer, monitor, and personal printer or place them in a standby mode at the end of the work day.

  • Screensavers do not save energy. Contrary to what many people believe, they use the full power of the monitor.

More information about how to better manage the power consumption of your computer can be found at the Energy Star Web site.
