The department of languages, linguistics and comparative literature in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters recently received a $5,000 gift from Il Circolo: The Italian Cultural Society of the Palm Beaches. Il Circolo is a Palm Beach County-based organization that supports and helps to develop an awareness of Italian culture and the arts. It derives its name from the Italian expression that literally means ‘the circle.’
This gift will help support FAU’s study abroad programs in Italy. The department sponsors programs in Venice, where students take courses in Italian studies and architecture, and in Orvieto (Umbria), where, under the heading “Textures and Impressions,” students explore studio arts. The funds from Il Circolo will be used to establish student scholarships in both programs. This newest gift to FAU is the latest in a 23-year relationship between Il Circolo and the university.
“The support from Il Circolo will offset the students’ costs in significant ways,” said Myriam Ruthenberg, professor in FAU’s department of languages, linguistics and comparative literature. “Especially in this economy, students who study in Italy this summer will appreciate our benefactors’ helping hand.” Ruthenberg came to FAU in 1986.
