Anthropology Department Faculty Members Supervise The Restoration of A Historic Hacienda in Ecuador

The Department of Anthropology, with a grant from the U.S. Ambassador's Fund for Overseas Development, is carrying out the restoration of the last remaining historic hacienda structure on the coast of Ecuador. 


The house, located in the village of Salango, Manabi Province, is being renovated with the collaboration of the Comuna Salango and Ecuador's Institute for National Cultural Patrimony (INPC).  This project which will substantially upgrade the capabilities of the Salango Research Center and provide the community of Salango with a venue for increased tourism.  A highly collaborative project, Dr. Harris and Ms. Martinez are providing ethnohistoric research and supervision, INPC has provided historic architectural support through the services of Mr. Jhony Ugalde and the Comuna Salango is providing the labor required.


The site visited by the Dean of FAU's College of Arts and Letters, Dr. Manjunath Pendakur.  The projected target for completion of the project is September 2009. 


Anthropology Department Faculty Member, Dr. Mary Cameron, Named Fulbright Scholar

Dr. Mary Cameron was named a Fulbright Scholar for her research about ayurvedic medicine used by women doctors in Nepal. The award will allow Dr. Cameron to advance her research by spending a year in Nepal working with medical professionals. Extremely prestigious, Fulbright Scholarships are only awarded annually to 7,500 recipients worldwide.


Anthropology Department Graduate Student Receives National Science Foundation Fellowship

Graduate student Ronda Graves received a three-year fellowship award from the National Science Foundation.

Her award, totaling $90,000 over three years, is to support her research in modern human evolution and skeletal development.

  • For Citizens and Visitors:   the Center has offered lectures and presentations to learn about the archaeology of Florida.  It has encouraged attendance at archaeological sites, on land and underwater, museums & cultural heritage sites. 

  • For Schools and Education Centers:  the Center has developed lesson plans and modules for the study of archaeology and conducted talks and demonstrations.

  • For Civic Organizations, Societies, and Clubs:  the Center has participated in  celebrations, meetings and events with heritage themes.

  • For Local Governments:  the Center has assisted with the evaluation of endangered sites, offered education opportunities for parks employees, consulted about cultural resource management, and encouraged visitors at local heritage tourism sites.

  • For the Florida Department of Historical Resources:  the Center has promoted state sponsored projects, provided educational materials to public schools and private schools, promoted underwater heritage tourism sites, participated in over 25 Florida Archaeology Month events, and provided education to the public at large.
