International Student Admissions

We are pleased that you are interested in the Florida Atlantic University. FAU is committed to maintaining a diverse student body and currently enrolls students from over 140 countries. APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Please plan on submitting your application as early as possible since additional processing time is needed for international applicants. Here are the FAU deadlines for international students:

Admission Requirements and Test Scores
Admission selection is based on the high school academic grade point average combined with acceptable results on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). To have SAT scores sent to Florida Atlantic University contact College Board at www.collegeboard.com or at (609) 771-7600. To have ACT scores sent contact American College Testing Program at www.act.org or (319) 337-1313.

Florida
Atlantic University calculates the academic grade point average used in the admissions selection criteria. Additional weight is given to all courses clearly marked Honors, Advanced, Gifted, Advanced Placement, Advanced International Certificate of Education or International Baccalaureate.


Students should complete the following units of study in high school.

English (3 with substantial composition)

4 units

Mathematics (Algebra 1 level and above)*

3 units

Natural Science (2 with lab)

3 units

Social Science

3 units

Foreign Language (1 language in sequence)

2 units

Academic Electives

3 units

Total

18 units


*Beginning in summer/fall 2011 freshman students will need to complete 4 units of math at the Algebra I level and above. All students are encouraged to take a math course in their senior year of high school.

The Florida Board of Governors sets minimum eligibility requirements.  The minimum required test scores are:

The writing section of the SAT and the ACT are not currently used in the selection process.  However, the writing section will be used in the selection process beginning fall 2009. The minimum composite SAT score will be 1390 or a composite score of 20 on the ACT.

Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission. Applicants who are not selected for their chosen term of entry may appeal the admissions decision through the Faculty Committee on Student Admissions Process.

Submit the Following
1.  Completed FAU application form with the required $30.00 application fee. To apply, please go to our main admissions web page and select the application method. The application fee can be paid online during the process. You may also pay online at a later time by selecting the "final step" link from our main admissions web page. Online payment can be made only by credit card. Students can also mail in a check, money order, postal money order, international money order and U.S traveler's check form (all must be drawn on a U.S. bank). Please mail to:

2.     If you have attended any international high schools or universities, a translation and evaluation of work completed at each institution will be necessary. Transcripts should be sent to one of the accredited evaluation services for course-by-course evaluation and overall GPA. For a list of accredited evaluation services please see the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) Members list. You should indicate that you wish for the evaluation to be sent directly to FAU. Please note that if you have earned 60 or more transferable credit hours at a post-secondary institution, it may not be necessary for you to submit your secondary school's records for admission purposes. However, you may wish to submit your secondary records to provide proof of completion of the foreign language requirement.

3.     Results of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) may be required of students whose first language is not English. Current FAU admission requirements are a score of 550 on the paper-based test (Toefl PBT), or 80 on the internet-based version (Toefl IBT). Instead of Toefl we accept IELTS with the minimum score of 6.5. Information about this examination can be obtained from TOEFL. FAU now offers TOEFL in the Boca Raton campus. You can find more information about it on our web site at http://www.fau.edu/testing/TOEFL.php.

Official TOEFL results are required of all applicants whose native language is not English. Students are exempt from taking the TOEFL exam if they meet the following criteria:

  • Students who have taken over 60 semester hours at a regionally-accredited post-secondary institution in the United States or another English speaking country.
  • Students who have attended a high school in the US for more than three years and have not taken ESL courses to fulfill the core English requirements.
  • Students who have attended a foreign secondary or post-secondary school whose primary language of instruction is English.

4.     Results of the SAT or ACT examination will be required if you have earned less than 60 semester hours of college credit. While there are no specific minimum score requirements on these examinations, they are used in conjunction with other required credentials, and we encourage you to prepare sufficiently to achieve the highest possible score.

5.     In addition to your application for FAU, you must submit some or all of the supporting documents to be issued an I-20, a document which enables you to study as an International, F1 visa student at FAU. The required documents are :

  • As a first time international student in the United States you must submit: 1) a detailed Financial Certification Form (FCF) and 2) a bank letter (written in English including U.S. dollar amounts), issued within 6 months from creating I-20 showing specific sources of financial support; It must also show the exact amounts expected from each source (all including tuition, fees, living expenses, books and health insurance = $30,242.80).
  • As a continuing international student attending a U.S school and currently under an F1 or J1 visa you must submit the following: - a detailed Financial Certification Form (FCF) and - a bank letter (written in English including U.S. dollar amounts, and issued within 6 months from creating I-20) showing specific sources of financial support and the exact amounts expected from each source (all including tuition, fees, living expenses, books and health insurance = $30,242.80); and - an International Student Visa Clearance Form (VCF). This form must be completed by the International Coordinator from your previous U.S. school.Very Important: All bank, scholarship and sponsor letters must be originals with original signatures.

6.   Submit an Immunization Form to the University Health Offices attesting to the good health of the applicant. Upon arrival to FAU, all international students are required to purchase annual medical insurance. Applicants must also show proof of conformity to the Measles Immunization Policy of the State University System.

Additional College Requirements 
School of Architecture: Any prospective architecture student who is interested in applying for the lower division sequence (Architectural Design 1) will need to fill out an additional application for the School of Architecture.  Students must apply first to FAU using of the Undergraduate admissions applications.

Admitted Freshmen Only
All admitted freshmen must confirm their intention to enroll and secure their place with the freshman class by submitting the required $200.00 admissions tuition deposit. Please note that the deposit is non-refundable and will be applied to your tuition and other expenses for the term in which you have been admitted to FAU. It will be forfeited if you pay the deposit and choose not to enroll at FAU.
Please Note: The tuition deposit is separate from the residence hall prepayment required by the Department of Housing and Residential Life.
